What is a Pro Rata Salary?

A pro rata salary is the portion of a full-time salary that corresponds to the hours, days or percentage of full-time work you do. For example, someone working 60% of a full-time pattern would usually start with 60% of the full-time salary before considering any other contractual adjustments.

Our pro rata calculator UK makes that comparison instantly and shows the result in useful pay periods.

How to Calculate Pro Rata

The basic formula for a salary adjusted by weekly hours is:

Pro Rata Salary = Full-Time Salary × (Your Hours ÷ Full-Time Hours)

For example, if you earn £30,000 full time and work 22.5 hours instead of 37.5 hours:

£30,000 × (22.5 ÷ 37.5) = £18,000

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about pro rata pay, working hours and our calculator.

What does pro rata mean?

Pro rata means “in proportion”. In salary calculations, it usually means scaling a full-time salary to match a reduced working pattern such as fewer hours, fewer days or a lower FTE.

How do I calculate a pro rata salary in the UK?

For hours, divide your weekly hours by the full-time weekly hours and multiply the full-time annual salary by that fraction. Our calculator does this automatically and shows the working.

Is pro rata pay the same as part-time pay?

Part-time describes the working pattern. Pro rata describes a common way of calculating the salary for that reduced working pattern. Employers may advertise either the full-time equivalent salary or the actual part-time salary, so check the wording.

Does the result include tax and pension deductions?

No. The main calculator estimates gross pay before Income Tax, National Insurance, pension contributions, student loan deductions, salary sacrifice or other payroll adjustments.

Can I calculate by days or FTE instead of hours?

Yes. Choose By Days or By FTE at the top of the calculator. Hours are usually the most precise method if working days have different lengths.
